Applegate, in the heart of the Berkshires, was built in the grand era of the 1920's by a New York surgeon for use as a summer estate. It is set on a park-like 6 acre country estate one half mile from the historic town of Lee and about 3 miles from Stockbridge. Once inside the iron gate, the circular drive gives you the first views of Applegate's sweeping manicured lawns and towering trees. The huge fragrant lilac bushes line the driveway and serve to separate the lawns into deliberate garden areas. The rose gardens, perennial beds, fruit orchard and vegetable garden provide interest all year. As you rest in one of the several large hammocks you might get a glimpse of "Gloria's Secret Garden". It invites you to walk in this shade garden or to stop to read on a stone bench. Each season offers you a wonderful view of nature in an estate setting. At the end of the drive, you arrive at a dramatic two story port-cochere of the Georgian Colonial Main House. The entryway is a spacious foyer furnished with plush carpets, a grandfather clock and other fine antiques. To one side of the foyer is the formal living room with several sitting areas, large fireplace and baby grand piano. This is the setting for the popular nightly wine and cheese reception. Adjacent to the living room is the less formal sun parlor divided into TV and game areas. On the other side of the foyer is the dining room. It is set for the full gourmet breakfast with a variety of tables to serve from 2 to 6 or more people. Accommodations A curved stairway leads you upstairs to Applegate's six guest rooms, each one decorated as distinctively and impeccably as the next. Besides each having their own private bath, guests will find fresh flowers in each guest room, along with a crystal decanter of brandy and Godiva chocolates. Each of the guest rooms are centrally air conditioned. During the cooler months, guests will enjoy the cozy fireplaces found in four of the guest rooms. At the same time, in each room, guests can snuggle under a warm feather comforter and experience the tranquility Applegate provides. Adjacent to the Main House is the Carriage House. It contains three units - two elegant king bedded suites and a two bedroom cottage with its own living room, kitchen, dining area, bathroom with whirlpool tub and deck overlooking the Berkshire Hills. The Inn is furnished in a comfortable elegant style. Each accommodation has a private bath, fireplace or stove and central air conditioning. Many of the rooms have a whirlpool tub, TV/VCR/CD, phone and computer jack, wet bar with refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker. There is an assortment of special touches in each guest room including fresh flowers, brandy and chocolates. Breakfast consists of freshly squeezed juice, a fruit course, cereal, granola, yogurt, a special hot entree of the day, baked muffins and breads, coffee and teas. On Sundays, a grand buffet encourages guests to linger over the newspapers. From the central foyer a curved staircase leads upstairs to five uniquely decorated queen bedded rooms and three luxurious king bedded suites. Area Activities The Town of Lee is in the middle of everything that is happening in the Berkshires and there is certainly something for every person at every season. The Norman Rockwell Museum is a wonderful venue and hosts 3 million visitors each year. Or would you rather picnic at Tanglewood and listen to the Boston Symphony Orchestra or watch dance at Jacobs Pillow. There are numerous theaters and fine art and crafts experiences abound. Of course there are wonderful outdoor things to do as well - hiking, boating, swimming, fishing, bicycling, golf, tennis, downhill and cross country skiing and snow shoeing. Shopping at boutiques, outlet stores and antique stores are also activities enjoyed by Applegate guests. Enjoy golf and tennis at the Greenock Country Club right across the road from Applegate. Return for a swim in our heated pool or continue into town to enjoy the town private beach on Laurel Lake. After an active day, relax and enjoy dinner at one of the fine Berkshire restaurants.
