"A breakfast to write home about."
REVIEW: "This congenial hotel, nestled in between Old Montreal and Downtown, is a perfect base for exploring both areas. Although the beautifully restored townhouses don't boast views of the cityscape, they benefit from inspirational interior design and as the name implies (and the breakfasts prove), mornings are gratifying. Vibrant artwork by local artist Benoit A Coté adds exuberance to the brick walls and wooden floors of guest rooms. Many of the regular rooms have tons of extra space, and some exhibit a romantic wood-burning fireplace. The deluxe rooms have whirlpools big enough for two, and apartments have courtyards out the back. Breakfast is something to look forward to. A reservation is required the night before, but worth it just to sit back and enjoy a leisurely stream of freshly squeezed orange juice and a spread of smoked salmon, cheeses, waffles, pastries, French toast and eggs, any way you like them.

"Upon discovering this quiet old street in downtown Montreal, Harold rang every buzzer to see if anyone was selling. Where there’s a will there’s a way; now the Côté empire is gradually marching down Argyle Avenue leaving luxurious rooms, suites and self-catering apartments in its wake.....
.... Harold is a perfectionist who loves shopping, the perfect combination for an aubergiste. He may tell you that the rooms are ‘stuffed with all kinds of old junk’, but every detail has been carefully considered. No single style pervades - if he likes something, he buys it. Moroccan lamps and mosaic tables are mixed with Persian rugs, chunky wooden furniture, exposed brickwork and ornate marble fireplaces. Huge, vibrant canvases by Quebec-born Benoit A. Côté fill the walls and massive panelled archways divide up the suites. Old wooden doorposts framed the bed in my ultra-stylish suite and the bathroom floor was a wacky mosaicked affair. The hub of the auberge is the breakfast room, a warm sunny spot where guests sit around Moroccan tables reading the paper, sipping freshly-squeezed orange juice and deciding just what to eat from the cornucopia of healthy delicacies. In the evenings guests can roam freely here and help themselves from the honesty bar. A big thumbs-up all around. Five minutes walk from Rue St Catherine and Rue Crescent."
